CINCINNATI, Dec. 19 (UPI) --
An Ohio snake owner died in a Cincinnati hospital after he was strangled by his python.
Ted Dres, 48, died Saturday at Bethesda North Hospital, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Tuesday.
Dres's death is the latest in a chain of incidents involving exotic pets in the state that have led lawmakers to consider new regulations.
"People who keep these type of animals as pets should know exactly what they're doing and what they're capable of," Andy Mahlman, spokesman for the Cincinnati Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told the Enquirer.
Mahlman said it is not uncommon for snake owners to pose for pictures with the animals coiled around their necks. "They don't realize they could be a few seconds away from death," he said.
"This is not just a joke or a plaything," Mahlman told the newspaper. "You're dealing with a creature that is capable of killing."
